A year ago, we promised to unveil Captain Péri’s rare photographs of the 1909 Battle of Yen Thé. Today, the wait is over! Over 80 never-before-seen images are now available.
Yen Thé - Dê Tham - 1
Forty-six postcards featuring views captured between 1902 and 1913, published by Dieulefils.
These postcards trace the journey of Đề Thám, his band of pirates, his wives, his children, and his stronghold.
They depict the French Foreign Legionnaires and colonial infantrymen, as well as the partisans and militiamen who fought against Đề Thám and pursued him to his hideout.
The cards also reveal his Vietnamese adversaries, such as Lê Hoàn and the chief "Mans," who refused to share power in Upper Tonkin and sought his death.
On this first page, we present the postcards referenced as 3300 to 3309.
