When postcards tell History

Autumn is settling in, and with it, an invitation to travel…

Dear friends of Cartacaro,

Summer 2025 will remain etched in our memories as a season of contrasts: between heatwaves and moments of sweetness, it was also for us a time rich in discoveries and emotions. At Cartacaro, we wanted to brighten your days, whether they were holidays or routine, by sharing unique moments. To do this, we invited you to dive into the 1950s, first through vibrant colors and then in black and white, to relive an era when each postcard was a bridge between two worlds. And today, we invite you to relive this heritage.

These postcards allowed us to explore the iconic cities of Hanoi, Saigon, Haiphong, Cape Saint-Jacques, Xieng Khouang, Phnom Penh, and Angkor.

With them, we plunged into the Indochinese countryside, where buffalo patiently carve the furrows of rice paddies and where the markets, bursting with colors and life, reveal a tradition that is still vibrant. And with these postcards, we discovered French and Vietnamese publishers who were able to capture the soul of a country in the midst of change, between ancestral heritage and emerging modernity.

But beyond these views, it is the fragments of life slipped into these letters that touch us the most. Words hastily scrawled, news sent across the seas to reassure, to say ’I think of you’, ’Tender kisses’, ’I will write to you more at length tomorrow’. Simple phrases, but which keep the flame of attachment alive, despite the distance and time.

Look at them with the eyes of those who once awaited them: mothers, children, lovers, for whom each postcard was a bit of happiness within reach.

Your feedback excites us! Tell us what these images inspire in you, what emotions or memories they awaken within you. And if you have your own stories related to postcards, feel free to share them.

A surprise is on the way... Cartacaro is preparing a collection of these postcards, but what medium should we choose, paper or digital?
