But what many collectors don’t know is that it’s a cliché by Aurélien Pestel and depicts the Than Thai emperor’s grandmother.
We discovered it while leafing through old photo albums of Europeans living in Cochinchina around 1900. They would buy photos and stick them in albums, sometimes writing captions next to them, and on one of these albums we read the text “grandmother of Than Thai”.
